There’s No Place Like Home: SE Health Applauds Milestone Report on Small Care Homes
Westcliff Place - Seniors Living House
SE Health applauds the release of the National Institute on Aging’s (NIA) Report, There's No Place Like Home, which highlights the unique and innovative small care home model. Small care homes provide accommodations and continuing care services within residential homes and neighbourhoods, giving older Canadians the opportunity to truly age at home and in place while receiving the care they need. SE Health supports the Report’s recommendation that small care home models should be urgently prioritized as part of future long-term care (LTC) home expansion across Canada.
In keeping with its purpose to bring hope and happiness to people and communities, SE Health is taking an active role in shaping the future of aging conversation. This commitment to ensuring a better and equitable future for all inspired SE Health's 2023 acquisition of Exquisicare – an Edmonton-based leader in small care home delivery. SE Health continues to advocate for smaller residential models of care, in alignment with the preferences of older adults, their families and caregivers.

The NIA report highlighted these key findings:
- Better resident outcomes: Enhanced safety, quality of life and care.
- Improved staff conditions: Higher job satisfaction, stronger engagement, and lower turnover.
- Impact on costs: Early evidence suggests lower resident health care costs.
- Community Integration: Small homes were found to fit more naturally into residential neighbourhoods and support localized, culturally relevant care.
“The NIA’s report highlights the importance of ensuring that leaders in both the public and private sector are working collaboratively towards solutions that Canadians want and need,” said John Yip, President and CEO of SE Health. “We continue to see an exciting opportunity to expand innovative approaches to seniors living and care beyond traditional institutional settings, while working to ensure these models are both accessible and sustainable.”
“For almost 15 years, Exquisicare has been operating small care homes in Edmonton and we continue to see the tremendous value of this model – for the people who live and work in our homes, their families and the health system,” said Dawn Harsch, President of Exquisicare. “As a proud small care home operator in the province of Alberta, we’re happy to see the work that has been done so far and it’s our hope that other provinces follow Alberta’s lead.”
