Building capacity in health care

Building capacity in health care - Westervelt College and Saint Elizabeth announce thousands of dollars in PSW Scholarships

Southwestern Ontario is currently experiencing a significant shortage of qualified Personal Support Workers. PSW's provide much needed support to our community and are valuable team members in home care organizations, playing a critical role in supporting seniors and those in need with the opportunity to stay in their homes or recuperate at home after medical procedures.

In response to this urgent need for PSW's, Westervelt College has added one additional PSW program per campus to assist with training more students to become qualified PSW's:

  • London - April 30th, 2018 (Evening Class)
  • Kitchener - May 7th, 2018 (Afternoon Class)
  • Brantford - May 14th, 2018 (Morning Class)

Saint Elizabeth, one of Canada’s largest social enterprises and a top employer in the home and community care sector, has partnered with Westervelt College and together are offering students a $1,000 scholarship if they enroll in one of the above start dates. In addition to the scholarship, Saint Elizabeth will guarantee an interview to all graduates.

What is PSW Training?

PSW training prepares students to assist with all aspects of daily living such as dressing, personal hygiene, mobility, as well as basic home management. Entrusted with the comfort, safety, and wellbeing of their clients, it's essential that PSWs demonstrate sensitivity and respect for those in their care. Once students have completed their training they may be tasked with supporting range of motion exercises, assisting with meal planning and preparation, and enabling social and recreational activities.

Why become a PSW?

Being a PSW is a great start to a career in health care, and an opportunity to connect with people in their homes when they need support the most, and give back to your community in a job that helps people every day. PSWs help others restore their happiness, health, and dignity. With the right holistic health care and social services training, you'll be ready to make a real difference.
